🚨 FIELD UPDATE

Two Scratches — The Field Is Shifting

Silent Tactic (Casse, post 13) — scratched Wednesday, bruised foot. Fulleffort (Cox, post 20) — scratched this morning, bone chip in ankle. Cox down to two of his original three.

Great White (Ennis, 50-1) and Ocelli (50-1) draw in. The field is still 20 but ticket construction just changed.

Why You Can't Bet the Kentucky Derby on Kalshi

Last Saturday, Polymarket quietly refunded every bet on its 2026 Kentucky Derby market and pulled the page. Kalshi never posted Derby contracts at all. In a year when prediction markets are taking on the NFL and NCAA, horse racing stopped them. The weapon: the Interstate Horseracing Act of 1978.

Dennis Drazin: "You can't say that the CFTC and their federal regs preempt federal law." But he also thinks racing should negotiate: "I think that we're leaving money on the table by not trying to figure this out."

📊 MARKET CHECK

Bernier Fair Odds Line

Matt Bernier published a true fair-value line summing to exactly 1.000. Top four: Renegade (7.3-1), Further Ado (9.5-1), Fulleffort (10.8-1, now scratched), Commandment (12.3-1). Chief Wallabee at 12.3-1, Emerging Market at 24-1. 14K views.

With Fulleffort out, the probabilities redistribute. Watch whether the tote reflects it Saturday.

🌧️ WEATHER UPDATE

Rain hit Churchill overnight. More possible Friday. Chad Brown moved Emerging Market's work up. O'Neill on Pavlovian: "He's a sure-footed dude." If we get a sloppy track Saturday, the handicapping changes significantly.

🥃 DERBY DRAM No. 4

Blanton's Original Single Barrel — Al's Select #12

MSRP ~$65 · 46.5% ABV · Buffalo Trace Distillery, Frankfort, KY

The world's first commercially marketed single barrel bourbon — and still one of its best. This particular bottle is a Sazerac barrel select, personally chosen from Warehouse H at Buffalo Trace, one of the distillery's most prized rickhouses thanks to extreme temperature swings that concentrate and intensify flavor. Vanilla, caramel and cherry on the nose with a distinctive butterscotch warmth and a hint of warehouse earthiness underneath. The palate moves from fresh cherry to cherrywood — same fruit, drier and more tannic as it develops. The finish is dry, warm, and not overly long. A crowd pleaser with enough complexity to satisfy an aficionado. Keep one on your shelf at all times — but don't overpay. MSRP exists. Find it there.

Tomorrow's Derby Dram: a Woodford Reserve that forgot to read the label — in the best possible way.

❓ Today's Open Question

Two scratches in 24 hours. Fulleffort was the Rich Strike comp — post 20, longshot, Jeff Ruby winner. Now he's out and Ocelli is in. Does the loss of Fulleffort and Silent Tactic change your tickets, or were they off your radar anyway?
